The Dniester River, historically the border between the Republic of Moldova and Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica, stretches for 250 miles between the two countries.
Independent since 1990, Pridnestrovie restored the traditional border which was breached in 1940 as the result of a secret pact between Soviet dictator Stalin and Hitler's Nazi Germany.
